Does Unlinking OneDrive Delete Files?

I used OneDrive for a long time, but I want to unlink it from my device. If I delete files from OneDrive, will the files be deleted from my device? What happens if I unlink OneDrive?

No, unlinking OneDrive does not automatically delete files on your OneDrive cloud drive. The files kept locally on your device or in the cloud storage linked to your OneDrive account are not immediately deleted when you unlink OneDrive from your device. The syncing between your device and the cloud storage is terminated when you unlink OneDrive. When you unlink the service from a device, the files in your OneDrive cloud storage stay in place. You can still access them by connecting another device to your OneDrive account or through the online interface.

In addition, unlinking does not automatically delete files synced from OneDrive on your device. These files will remain on your device. But they become local files and are no longer connected to the version on OneDrive.

When you unlink OneDrive from a device, the following happens:

  • Syncing is interrupted.
  • Files in the cloud are not affected.
  • Local files are retained;
  • Relinking requires verification.
  • Temporary files are cleared.

If you are worried about losing files, it is recommended that you back up the OneDrive files on your device before canceling sync. This way, even if the folders are deleted, you can still restore them from the backup.
