What Is iPhone Battery Health?

iPhone Battery Health is a feature added to iOS version 11.3, released in 2018. It monitors the iPhone's battery health and shows you which app or activity has the biggest battery drain. iPhone Battery Health also helps you decide whether you need a new battery or can wring more life out of the existing one.

The Battery Health includes four aspects of information to help you understand and optimize the battery performance:

• Maximum Capacity: Maximum capacity measures the efficiency of your battery capacity relative to when your iPhone came out of the factory. Batteries typically lose efficiency as the battery chemically ages, which means your iPhone battery will hold less and less charge, and you will have fewer hours of usage. The maximum capacity between 100% and 80% is considered optimal.
• Peak Performance Capability: Most of the time, iPhone Battery Health will include a message saying, 'Your battery is currently supporting normal peak performance.' As your battery health degrades, so can its ability to deliver peak performance. If you experience a recent crash or shutdown, the performance management is automatically applied to prevent sudden shutdown again.
• Optimized Battery Charging: This option is designed to prevent your iPhone/iPad from charging over 80% and protect the battery to increase your overall battery lifespan. This option is ideal for those who like to charge their iPhone/iPad/iWatch most of the time or even overnight.
• Clean Energy Charging: It engages only where you spend the most time and regularly charges your iPhone for a long time, such as your home and workplace. The feature doesn't engage if your charging habits are variable or you're in a new location, such as when you travel.

Suppose your iPhone cannot determine the device's battery health. In that case, you will see an important battery message at the top of the Battery Health screen suggesting a battery service, that is, a battery repair or replacement.

How to Check iPhone Battery Health

To view your iPhone Battery Health is easy:

• For iOS 11.3 and later users, go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health.
• For iOS 16.1 and later users, go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging.
• For iOS 17.4 & iPhone 15 and later users, go to Settings > Battery. Then, you can see the Battery Health listing now has a readout such as 'Normal' without tapping Battery Health & Charging. When you unfold the Battery Health menu, you will see the battery health status, Maximum Capacity, Cycle Count, Manufacture Date, and First Use date.

When to Replace iPhone Battery

In ideal conditions, iPhone 14 and earlier models will hold 80% of the original capacity after 500 complete charge cycles, while iPhone 15 models will retain 80% of the original capacity after 1000 complete charge cycles. When you see that the iPhone's battery health is less than 80%, it's time you replace your battery; otherwise, it will influence your iPhone experience.

iPhone Battery Replacement Cost:

iPhone 14 and 15 devices have the most expensive out-of-warranty battery replacements at $99. However, we also saw a change in March 2023 that increased battery replacements for Apple's older iPhone models by $20. That pushed the iPhone 13 through iPhone X up to $89 and the iPhone SE, iPhone 8, and earlier to $69.
