I have 5000 photos on my iPhone. But they take up a lot of storage on my iPhone. I don't think the number of my photos is large. Why are my photos taking so much storage?

Your photos usually take up a lot of storage space on iPhone when they are typically saved in high-resolution formats. The reasons are also related to the resolution, format and number of your iPhone. There is a full list of why photos take so much storage on iPhone.

  • Photo Resolution: You may have toggle on the 'Optimize iPhone Storage' feature on your iPhone. A photo with a higher quality will have more detail and demand more storage space. Although high-resolution photos are excellent for printing or closely inspecting details, their file sizes are also greater.
  • Photo format: The rate of compression varies throughout different photo formats. Since RAW format photos are uncompressed, they occupy more storage than JPEGs.
  • Photo Number: Your photos will take up more storage space overall the more you have. If you have thousands of photos on your iPhone, they will take up much space.
  • Backups: The quantity of storage needed increases if you have numerous backups of your photos stored on your iPhone.

If you want to fix the storage on your iPhone, you can delete any duplicates or unnecessary photos. You can also change the 'Optimize iPhone Storage' to 'Keep Originals.' If you indeed have a large number of photos on your iPhone, you can back up them to a computer to save them. This can free up the iPhone's storage. It is recommended that you use EaseUS MobiMover to back up your photos. It is the best iPhone backup tool with a fast backup speed.
