If there is nothing wrong with the Silent/Ring switch on the left side of your iPhone. You can put your iPhone on silent easily and quickly by flipping the button. Tip 1: Use Volume Down button to silence iPhone

Tip 2: Don't choose any ringtone for your notifications
If you want your iPhone to make no sound while receiving notifications, go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics, choose the category you'd like to mute, including Text Tone, New Mail, Sent Mail, Calendar Alerts, Reminder Alerts, AirDrop, and then select None under Alerts Tones. Tip 3: Use Do Not Disturb to put your iPhone on silent
Putting your iPhone in Do Not Disturb mode, the calls and alerts received will be silenced when your iPhone is locked or all the time (according to your settings). Go to Settings > Do Not Disturb, toggle on Do Not Disturb and choose when to silence your iPhone calls and notifications, While iPhone is locked or Always.
The Silent/Ring switch only helps to put your iPhone on silent or ring. If you want to put your iPhone on vibrate, you need to go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics and turn on Vibrate on Ring, Vibrate on Silent or both.
